More about Garde & Greenhouse Furniture

Furniture Built for a Greenhouse

Greenhouse furniture has to cope with conditions that indoor furniture does not: humidity that stays high for days, temperature swinging twenty degrees between afternoon and dawn, and direct sun through glass. Ordinary indoor pieces warp, corrode and grow mould in that environment.

What works is material that tolerates damp and movement. Powder coated steel, treated timber, aluminium and rattan effect weave all handle it. Untreated softwood, MDF, veneer and standard upholstery do not.

Working Furniture and Sitting Furniture

Most greenhouses end up with both, and it helps to separate them when planning.

Working pieces are benches, potting tables and storage. They live along the walls, they get compost on them, and they are chosen for height and surface rather than looks.

Sitting pieces are bistro sets, chairs, side tables and loungers. They need floor space rather than wall space, which is the constraint in most houses, and they are what turns the building into somewhere you spend time.

Fitting Seating Into a Working House

A house under ten square metres rarely holds both a full growing layout and a seating area. The usual compromise is a folding chair and a small table that come out when wanted and stack against the wall otherwise.

  • Folding and stacking pieces cost nothing in floor space when not in use.
  • A bench with storage beneath serves as both seating and a place for pots.
  • Narrow side tables fit between staging runs where a full table would not.

Above about fifteen square metres there is genuine room for a dedicated corner, and at that point an orangery or conservatory may be a better fit if sitting is the main purpose.

Living With It

Condensation drips from the glazing overnight, so anything left directly under the roof will be wet by morning. Cushions and soft furnishings need somewhere dry to go, or they will hold damp and go mouldy within a season.

Steel and timber both benefit from being kept off a wet floor. Feet or pads that raise them a few millimetres make a noticeable difference over years.

Styling the Space

Lighting extends the hours a greenhouse is usable, and fittings need to be rated for damp conditions rather than borrowed from indoors. The lighting range covers both grow lights and ambient fittings.

For the rest, the interior styling range covers textiles, lanterns and hooks chosen to handle the same conditions as the furniture.
